Which stainless steel types are popular ?

Austenitic stainless steel: marked by 200 and 300 series number. Its microstructure is austenite. Common types are the following:

1Cr18Ni9Ti(321)、0Cr18Ni9(302)、00Cr17Ni14M02(316L)

Advantages: easy to welding, good plasticity (not easy to break), deformation, good stability (not easy to rust), easy passivation.

Disadvantages: particularly sensitive to medium in solution that has chloride, prone to stress corrosion.

 

Ferritic stainless steel: marked by 400 series number. Its internal microstructure is ferrite, and its chromium mass fraction is in the range of 11.5% ~ 32.0%.

Common types are the following:

00Cr12、1Cr17(430)、00Cr17Mo、00Cr30Mo2、Crl7、Cr17Mo2Ti、Cr25,Cr25Mo3Ti、Cr28

Advantages: high chromium content, good thermal conductivity, stability is better, good heat dissipation.

Disadvantages: poor mechanical properties and process performance.

 

Martensitic stainless steel: marked by 400 series number. Its microstructure is martensite. The mass fraction of chromium in this kind of steel is 11.5% ~ 18.0%.

Common types are the following:

1Cr13(410), 2 Cr13(420)、3 Cr13、1 Cr17Ni2

Advantages: high carbon content, high hardness.

Disadvantages: poor plasticity and weldability.

Stainless steel alloy 304 is an extremely popular low-cost alloy, ideal for parts that require forming or welding. It has excellent corrosion, oxidation, and heat resistance and is the most weldable of any steel alloy. 304 is not magnetic.

304 has a machining cost factor of 5.0 when compared to steel 12L14. It is excellent for welding and produces tough and ductile welds. 304 does not respond to heat treatment, but can be cold worked to increase tensile strength and hardness. Annealing is recommended after forging and cold working.
